  10. GENERAL INFORMATION
  11. -------------------
  12.  
  13. Surfer Central is a great tool that allows you to organize and maintain
  14. your Internet addresses. Addresses can be assigned to different 
  15. categories and all database fields are customizable. Surfer Central
  16. also acts as a toolbar for all of your Winsock applications.
  17.  
  18. This version of Surfer Central is classified as shareware. You have 30
  19. days to evaluate Surfer Central after which continued use requires that 
  20. you register the program.
  21.  
  22. The shareware version of the program is freely distributable.

  25. UPGRADING

  30. -=> It is recommended that you do a FULL installation <=-

  32. If you are upgrading to version 1.20 of Surfer Central and would like 
  33. to preserve your settings, there is one important item of note: If you 
  34. want to keep your existing setup (i.e. Window size, site list header, 
  35. winsock tools configuration, etc.), when you are presented with the 
  36. dialog box that allows you to select the type of installation (full, 
  37. minimal, custom) choose the Custom option. When prompted for groups 
  38. of files to install, deselect the User Initialization file option. 
  39. You may allow the installation to continue and safely copy over old 
  40. versions of the files. The new version (1.20) will read your old 
  41. SURFRCEN.INI file correctly.

  43. NOTE: If things don't look right after you perform the above steps
  44. (particularly if the category summary dialog box appears blank), 
  45. simply exit Surfer Central and reload it. That should solve the problem.

  48. INSTALLATION
  49. ------------

  51. ** IMPORTANT **  --  if you have not unzipped the zip file 
  52. SURFR120.ZIP using the -d option, please delete the files that
  53. you have uncompressed and repeat the unzipping process using
  54. the command:
  55.  
  56.         PKUNZIP -d SURFR120.ZIP
  57.  
  58. If you are using another utility such as WinZip, please indicate
  59. that you would like the directory structure within the zip file
  60. preserved.
  61.  
  62. After the files have been correctly uncompressed you should be
  63. left some text files and two other files in the directory 
  64. (INSTALL.EXE and INSTALL.INF). There should also be a 
  65. subdirectory named DISK1 containing the compressed Surfer 
  66. Central program files.

  68. To install Surfer Central, run INSTALL.EXE from within Windows 
  69. and follow the instructions. After installation you will be presented
  70. with a readme file (this one). Please EXIT NotePad when you have
  71. completed reading the file.

  73. NOTE: If you have not yet loaded Windows, you may type INSTALL from
  74. the DOS prompt (in the directory where INSTALL.EXE is located) and
  75. Windows will be loaded automatically.

  78. OTHER NOTES
  79. -----------

  81. - A handy uninstall utility has been included with Surfer Central.
  82.   To remove the program from your system, find the Windows Program
  83.   Manager group containing the Surfer Central icon. Also in this
  84.   group will be an icon marked 'Uninstall Surfer Central'. Simply
  85.   click here and the program will be completely removed
  86.  
  87.         IMPORTANT: Your data files will also be deleted if they
  88.         are contained in a subdirectory beneath the Surfer Central
  89.         directory (e.g. in \SURFRCEN\DATABASE).

  91. - A printed manual has not been included with this version of Surfer
  92.   Central. However, FULL details about all program functions and
  93.   procedures for registration are provided in the Help file. To view
  94.   this information, run Surfer Central by double-clicking on the
  95.   program icon and choose Contents from the Help menu.

  101. - Surfer Central has been tested using Windows 95. My tests suggest 
  102.   that the program is compatible with Windows 95. The only known 
  103.   problem is with the HWA contents tree - clicking topics on the 
  104.   tree does not change to the corresponding topic in the help window. 
  105.   This problem is currently being investigated by Olson Software 
  106.   (makers of HWA).
